Since independence in 1968, Mauritius has developed from a low-income, agriculturally based economy to a middle income diversified economy with growing industrial, financial, and tourist sectors. For most of the period, annual growth has been of the order of 5% to 6%. This has been reflected in increased life expectancy, lowered infant mortality and an improved infrastructure.

The Mauritian economy is dependent mainly on sugarcane plantations, textiles, tourism and services. Other sectors in the economy are rapidly developing as well. Sugar cane is grown on about 90% of the cultivated land area and accounts for 25% of export earnings

The island of Mauritius is famous for having been the only known home of the dodo. The Dodo is a lesson in extinction. They were first sighted around 1600 on the island, unfortunatley the Dodo was extinct less than eighty years later.
