The State of Kuwait, a sovereign Arab emirate on the coast of the Persian Gulf, is enclosed by Saudi Arabia to the south and Iraq to the north and west.

Kuwait has the world's fifth largest oil reserves and is the third richest country in the world per capita. Petroleum and petroleum products now account for nearly 95% of export revenues, and 80% of government income.

The land area is considered arable. Some of the world's richest oil fields are in Kuwait,  with the Burgan field having a total capacity of approximately 70 billion barrels of proven oil reserves.

Other major industries include shipping, construction, cement, water desalination, construction materials and financial services. Kuwait's climate limits agricultural development. Consequently, with the exception of fish, it depends almost wholly on food imports. About 75% of potable water must be distilled or imported
