A sign language interpreter and trainer, with the Gambia Association of the Deaf and hard of Hearing
What's the context and purpose of the role?
You'll be working with the Association of the Deaf and hard of hearing to improve the provision of sign language interpreting. There's a severe shortage of sign language interpreters and most of who have received only a few months training. There few people have advanced qualifications in teaching deaf people, so your contribution will have a long lasting and dramatic effect. By providing better training for interpreters and teachers, the deaf and hard of hearing communities will benefit from greater independence through their ability to communicate.
What does the role involve?
What skills, experience and personal qualities are needed for the role?
You will have a professional or academic qualification relating to sign language. You could be a teacher, community or health worker, or occupational therapists. In addition your work will have given you experience of teaching deaf people, teaching sign language and of interpreting sign language. The job centres round training and developing the skills of others, so evidence of this in your professional life is desirable. You will need to be flexible, adaptable and comfortable with setting up and managing projects with little professional support.
