Job Description - Pharmacology Lecturer

What's the context and purpose of the role?

HIV and AIDS prevalence is currently estimated to be 7% of the population, approximately 1.1 million Tanzanians. Based at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), you'll improve the quality of teaching in the faculty and, in so doing, help tackle Tanzania's health crisis by training students to work in the field of Pharmacology. MUHAS is the main medical training institution in Tanzania and by joining its staff, you'll be making a valuable contribution towards the Ministry of Health's ambitious Care and Treatment Plan. The plan aims to provide quality care and treatment to at least 400,000 people before the close of the decade, with over US$500 million are committed to its implementation.

What does the role involve?

  • Teaching and carrying out student assessments in Pharmacology to undergraduate and postgraduate medical, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Nursing students.
  • Working with colleagues in the faculty to participate in the control of HIV infection and management of AIDS nationwide.

What skills, experience and personal qualities are needed for the role?

You'll need a PhD or Master's in Pharmacology. You'll also have at least one year's practical experience in lecturing or teaching. The role requires a very flexible and adaptable approach, excellent communication and problem solving skills, with a commitment to learning. Patience and a positive outlook are essential to succeed in a new and often challenging environment.

You'll be based in Dar Es Salaam, a cosmopolitan capital city with a variety of restaurants, shops, bars and beaches. There are many international volunteers and expats and you'll find plenty do outside of your working hours. You'll be provided with accommodation on campus, which offers easy access to internet facilities.
